In January 2026, Target made an announcement that stopped a lot of people in their tracks.

The retailer — known for its dollar bins, its home décor aisles, and its ability to turn a quick errand into a $200 shopping trip — announced a 30% expansion of its wellness assortment. Thousands of new items. First-ever in-store wellness events. A dedicated wellness experience both in-store and online. And a stated goal to make wellness “a through line across categories — from beauty to baby care to food and beverage.”

Not a wellness brand. Target.

Here’s the number that tells you everything you need to know: 70% of Target guests are already shopping wellness there. Not at a specialty wellness boutique. Not at a medspa or a nutrition studio. At Target. On the same trip where they grab dish soap and throw pillows.

That single statistic should shift how every beauty, wellness, and retail business owner thinks about her customer.

Understanding this shift — and building a wellness marketing strategy for your small business around it — is the single most important marketing move you can make right now.

Because here’s what it tells us: your customer doesn’t think about wellness as a category anymore. She thinks about it as a baseline. A standard. Something she expects to find woven into every brand she interacts with — no matter what that brand sells.

Wellness is no longer a category — your customers now expect it to be part of your brand, no matter what industry you’re in. Food brands are adding adaptogens. Fashion brands are talking longevity. Retailers are building community. Hospitality brands are rebuilding around sleep, recovery, and nutrition. Technology companies are launching health tracking as their primary product.

The lines have disappeared. And that changes everything about how you market your business.

Here’s the thing though — most business owners hear that and feel pressure. Another standard to meet. Another shift to keep up with.

I want to offer a different frame.

This isn’t pressure. It’s an invitation. And for beauty, wellness, and retail business owners specifically, the wellness revolution is actually the best marketing opportunity you’ve seen in a decade — if you know where to look.

Here are three opportunities hiding inside this shift that most businesses are missing entirely.

Opportunity #1: Your Customer Is Building a Daily Wellness Routine — And There’s an Open Seat at Her Table

Something has fundamentally changed in how your customer thinks about what she buys and why.

She’s not shopping for one-off treatments or products anymore. She’s curating a lifestyle. Building a routine. Assembling a daily practice that supports how she feels, how she looks, how she recovers, how she ages, and how she shows up in the world.

The data from inside the aesthetics industry makes this concrete. According to the BCG Medical Aesthetics Provider and Consumer Survey 2025, 74% of aesthetics consumers have already tried at least one adjacent treatment category — nutrition plans, longevity treatments, hormone therapy, hair restoration. They’re not stopping at one thing. They’re building a comprehensive approach to their health and their appearance — and they’re actively looking for the businesses that understand that.

Even more telling: 72% would prefer wellness and longevity services to be offered in the same practice as their aesthetics care. They don’t want to drive across town to four different providers. They want a home base. A business that understands their whole wellness picture and can serve more of it.

And the loyalty that comes with that? Remarkable. 83% of medspa clients now consider themselves regulars — visiting on a monthly basis. Not seasonally. Not for a special occasion. Monthly. Because wellness has moved from occasional luxury to regular routine.

McKinsey reports that nearly 30% of Gen Z and millennial consumers in the US now prioritize wellness significantly more than one year ago. These are your next decade of clients. And they’re not coming in for a single service. They’re looking for a business to commit to.

Here’s the marketing opportunity inside all of this: most businesses are still marketing like their customer is a transaction. Come in for this treatment. Buy this product. Here’s your receipt.

The businesses winning right now are marketing like they want to be part of her life. They’re talking about routines, not services. Outcomes, not treatments. Relationships, not appointments.

The marketing shift: Stop selling the visit. Start selling what happens when she makes you part of her weekly routine. What does her skin look like six months in? How does she feel going into her annual physical having invested in her wellness all year? What does consistency with you actually give her? Lead with that — and watch the conversation change.

Opportunity #2: Personalization Is What She’s Asking For — And Most of Your Competitors Aren’t Delivering It

Here is the most striking number I’ve seen in any industry research this year.

Seventy-seven percent of aesthetics consumers want a personalized treatment plan. Only half of providers are actually offering one.

Read that again. More than three quarters of your potential clients are walking in hoping for a personalized approach — a mapped-out plan built specifically for them, their goals, their timeline, their budget. And roughly half of them are walking out without one.

That gap — 77% expecting it, 50% getting it — is not a problem. It is a wide open door.

The wellness consumer of 2026 is sophisticated, self-directed, and deeply invested in outcomes. She has done her research. She knows her ingredients. She follows cosmetic chemists and longevity doctors on social media. She is not coming to you for a generic recommendation. She is coming to you because she believes you can see her specifically — and build something specifically for her.

NIQ’s Global State of Health & Wellness report puts it plainly: health and wellness in the minds of consumers is becoming less about what they buy, but rather how they buy. Brands should design for consumers’ need states, not product categories.

Not categories. Need states. Individual, specific, personal need states.

And here’s the beautiful thing: you don’t need a complex technology system or a massive team to deliver this. You need a treatment assessment process. A conversation that goes deeper than “what are you hoping to address today?” You need a plan — even a simple one — that shows your client you’ve thought about her specifically. That you’re not offering her a menu. You’re building her a roadmap.

The businesses that are doing this — and marketing it clearly — are not just filling their calendars. They are creating clients who refer, who return, and who feel a loyalty that no promotion or discount ever manufactured.

Gen Z and Millennials are leading this shift most dramatically. 53% of Gen Z and 52% of Millennials now receive combination treatments — more than one treatment in the same visit. They’re not coming in for one thing. They’re coming in for a plan. The businesses that offer that plan, and market it as a signature part of their approach, are the ones building the client bases that will carry them through the next decade.

The marketing shift: Make personalization visible in your marketing — not just in your practice. Talk about your assessment process. Show the before-and-after of a treatment plan, not just a single treatment. Use language like “we build a plan around you” rather than “we offer these services.” When your marketing signals that you see your client as an individual, the right clients self-select immediately.

Opportunity #3: The Wellness Expectation Is Raising the Bar Everywhere — Which Means the Businesses That Meet It Stand Out Instantly

Here’s the counterintuitive truth about the wellness revolution: the fact that it’s happening everywhere is actually good news for small businesses that move quickly.

When a shift is happening across every industry simultaneously — when Target is expanding its wellness assortment and fashion brands are talking longevity and food companies are adding adaptogens — it raises your customer’s baseline expectation for every brand she interacts with. Including yours.

That sounds like more pressure. But here’s what it actually means: the business that meets that expectation in her specific category feels like a revelation. Because most businesses in any given category haven’t moved yet.

Ulta Beauty saw this clearly. In early 2026, Ulta redesigned its stores around wellness identity — launching 23 new wellness-led products in Q1 alone, including ingestible supplements and skincare brands targeting Gen Z consumers. A beauty retailer that already dominated its category decided to rebuild around where its customer was going — before the competition caught up.

For your business, the lesson is this: you don’t have to rebuild everything. You don’t need to add new services or redesign your space tomorrow. What you need to do is look at how you talk about what you already do — and ask yourself whether your marketing reflects the wellness identity your customer is building.

Does your website speak to outcomes and routines — or does it read like a service menu?

Does your social content educate and inspire — or does it only promote?

Does your client communication make her feel like you’re invested in her wellness journey — or just her next appointment?

The wellness revolution is not asking you to become a different business. It’s asking you to talk about your business differently. To position what you already do inside the story your customer is already telling herself about her health, her longevity, and her quality of life.

That’s a marketing problem. And marketing problems have marketing solutions.

The fastest, most practical way I know to rebuild your message around your customer’s wellness identity is the StoryBrand framework. The StoryBrand Soundbite Strategy Course walks you through building a clear, compelling message that speaks directly to who your customer is becoming — not just what she’s buying. It’s the tool I recommend to every beauty, wellness, and retail owner who is ready to stop sounding like everyone else in her category and start sounding like exactly what her customer has been looking for.

If you want a faster path to the same clarity, StoryBrand AI guides you through the process using AI — ideal if you want results quickly without a big time investment.

The marketing shift: Audit your message through a wellness identity lens. Ask yourself: does my marketing speak to who my customer is becoming — or just what she’s coming in for? If the answer is the latter, that’s where to start.

The Path Forward

Target selling wellness alongside paper towels is not a quirk or a trend. It’s a signal.

Your customer has already decided that wellness is part of her identity. She’s living it, investing in it, and expecting to find it reflected in every brand she chooses to spend money with.

The businesses that recognize this shift and update their marketing to meet her where she is — right now, before the rest of the market catches up — will build the kind of client loyalty that advertising can never buy.

You’re not being asked to become a different business. You’re being asked to tell a better story about the business you already are.

The wellness revolution isn’t coming. It’s already here. And it brought your customers with it.
