GET ON THE LIST

My inbox has been unusually busy this week.

Business owners are forwarding alarming posts. Clients texting questions. People who never usually reach out about tech news are suddenly very concerned about something called AI watermarking and what it means for their content, their reach, and their credibility with clients.

I get it. The posts going around are genuinely alarming if you read them at face value. But after spending several days digging into what is actually happening, separating the confirmed facts from the speculation and the social media panic. I want to give you a clear, plain-language picture of what this means for your business.

The short version: it is more nuanced than many of the panic posts suggest. And the most important thing you can do right now is understand exactly what is happening so you can make smart decisions moving forward.

Let me start with how the panic started.

What Happened to Jess Bruno And Why It Matters for You

A content creator named Jess Bruno posted a carousel she created herself. She made it. Her words. Her ideas. Instagram labeled it AI-generated anyway.

When she called Meta to ask why, they confirmed it was because she had used Canva’s background remover tool on one of the images.

The internet proceeded to lose its mind.

Here is what actually happened.

Canva’s background remover is powered by artificial intelligence. When you use it, or any other AI-powered feature inside Canva, the exported file gets quietly tagged with a digital label that identifies it as AI-processed. You cannot see this tag. It does not appear anywhere on the image itself. But it is embedded inside the file data.

When Jess uploaded her carousel to Instagram, Instagram read that hidden tag and automatically displayed an AI Info label on her post.

She did not generate the content with AI. She used one AI-powered tool for one small edit. And the result was an AI label on content she created herself.

This is the thing that has every creator and business owner justifiably frustrated. Because almost everyone uses AI-powered features inside their design tools now: background removers, image enhancers, smart crop tools, color enhancers and most people had no idea those features were quietly tagging their files.

Here is what you need to know.

This applies to Canva. It also applies to Adobe products, CapCut, and many other design tools that use AI-powered features. If you used an AI-powered feature to create or edit an image before uploading it to Instagram or Facebook, your post may carry an AI label or be at risk of getting one.

The workaround is simple. Before uploading any image to Instagram or Facebook, take a screenshot of the image on your phone and upload the screenshot instead of the original file. The screenshot strips the hidden tag. It does reduce the image quality slightly, but for most social media purposes the difference is negligible.

For carousels, check every single slide. One tagged image in a carousel can trigger the AI label on the entire post.

If you want to preserve full image quality, there are free browser tools that strip the hidden tag from your file without reducing quality. Search for “remove AI metadata from image,” and you will find several options. Run your image through one of those tools before uploading, and the tag is gone.

What Anthropic Just Announced And What It Means for Your Social Media Captions

Separate from the Canva situation, although related, Anthropic announced that starting August 2, 2026, all content created with Claude now carries an invisible watermark.

Let me explain what that actually means in simple terms (there are a lot of confusing explanations out there).

When Claude writes anything, like a caption, a blog post, an email, or a product description, it now subtly adjusts certain word choices in a way that creates a detectable pattern. You cannot see it. It does not change the meaning or quality of what Claude wrote. But a detection tool that knows what to look for can identify that Claude had a hand in the content.

This is not a visible label that appears on your Instagram post. Right now, Instagram is not reading Claude’s text watermark to flag your captions with an AI label. Your Claude-written captions are not currently being visibly labeled on social media.

But this is the part worth paying close attention to: the watermark is there. In the text. Right now. And I believe as platforms continue to build out their ability to detect AI-written content, it is reasonable to expect that visible labeling of AI-written text is coming very soon. My belief is that we will see this in the next year.

Getting ahead of this now is significantly easier than reacting to it later.

There is one more thing worth knowing about this watermark. It does not just appear in content Claude wrote from scratch. If you wrote something yourself and then asked Claude to clean it up, polish the language, or make a few edits, and you accepted those edits, your content may now carry the watermark too. The watermark shows that Claude had a hand in the content. It does not distinguish between Claude writing everything and Claude tweaking one sentence.

That is the part that genuinely concerns me on behalf of business owners who use Claude as an editing tool. Using it to write everything from scratch is being treated the same as using it to fix a typo. That is not a fair distinction, and it is one the industry will need to grapple with.

What This Means for Your Business Right Now

For your images and visual content, act now. If you use Canva and you use any AI-powered features, your images may be getting tagged and labeled on Instagram and Facebook right now. The screenshot workaround is free, fast, and effective. Start doing it immediately.

For your written content: Claude-written captions are not currently triggering visible labels on social media. But the watermark is embedded in everything Claude touches. The smart move right now is to make sure your voice, your perspective, and your expertise are genuinely present in every piece of content Claude helps you create. Not just to avoid a future label. Because your clients can tell the difference between content that sounds like you and content that sounds like a very capable robot. And the former builds trust in a way the latter never will.

There is also a search engine implication worth noting. Recent research shows that watermarked content is currently ranking on average five positions lower in Google search results than non-watermarked content. For business owners who rely on their blog or website content for organic search traffic, this is a real consideration. Adding your own voice, your own examples, and your own expertise on top of any AI-assisted content is not just good practice — it is now a strategic necessity.

The Bigger Picture

Here is what I want you to take away from all of this.

The tools are not going away. AI-powered features in design tools, AI writing assistants, AI editing tools: these are now part of how almost all small businesses create content, and that is not a bad thing. The efficiency gains are real. The quality improvements are real. The ability to create more content with less time and fewer resources is genuinely valuable.

What is changing is the context in which that content exists. Your audience is becoming more aware of AI involvement in content creation. Platforms are building systems to detect and label it. Search engines are beginning to weight it differently. And the distinction between content that was generated entirely by AI and content that was created by a real human with AI assistance is becoming the most important line in your content strategy.

Content that sounds like you and that carries your perspective, your experience, your voice, your specific point of view on your industry is going to become more valuable, not less, as AI content becomes more detectable and more common.

This is an opportunity for you. The business owners who use AI as a tool to amplify their thinking rather than a replacement for it are going to stand out in a way that matters to clients. And in a world where AI content is becoming easier to detect, standing out is going to be what wins.
