GET ON THE LIST

I will be honest with you. I do not take enough days like this.

Days with an intentionally light agenda. Where the morning belongs to the people I love and me before it belongs to anything else. Where the goal is not productivity but clarity… the kind that only comes when you stop moving long enough actually to think.

Labor Day, this Monday, is one of those days. And I am treating it exactly that way.

Not as a day to catch up on email. Not as a chance to get ahead on content. Not as a guilt-free excuse to scroll for two hours and call it rest.

As a genuine pause. A morning to reflect on the last 90 days and use that reflection to prepare for the most important quarter of the year: Q4, the last 90 days of 2026.

I want to share what that looks like for me. Not because my Monday routine is particularly special. But because I think we forget, as business owners, that reflection is part of the work. Not the break from the work. The work itself.

What My Monday Actually Looks Like

A SLOW START:

First things first: coffee, for my husband John and for me. That happens before anything else in this house, and I would not have it any other way.

Then Odin and Luna need to be taken care of. Our dogs do not observe federal holidays, sadly! After the dogs are sorted and the coffee is in hand, I pray, and I read. This is the quiet part of my morning that I protect most fiercely. It sets the tone for everything that follows.

I have also learned, finally, at this stage of life, that sleep is not something to sacrifice in the name of productivity. I used to feel vaguely guilty about not being a 5 am person. I am not anymore. I love every minute of sleep I can get before waking up naturally somewhere between 6:30 and 7 am. If you are still setting a 5 am alarm to prove something to yourself, I want to gently encourage you to reconsider.

TIME ALONE:

On a day like this, I am more likely to take a class at Life Time, a good GTX workout that actually challenges me, than to take a gentle walk or do yoga. I like to move with intention. Exercise is not optional for me. It is part of how I think clearly and show up well for everything else.

And as a treat, a massage or some time in the sauna. Not because I am being indulgent. Because it genuinely resets everything. There is a version of rest that is passive and a restorative version. I am always chasing the restorative kind.

JOURNAL REFLECTIONS:

This is the part I look forward to most. Before every new quarter, I sit with the same four questions. They are not complicated. But they are surprisingly hard to answer honestly, and the honesty is the whole point. And did you know people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them?

Four Questions Worth Sitting With Before Q4

Question 1: What am I proud of in the last 90 days?

Start here. Not with what went wrong or what you did not finish or where you fell short. Start with what you actually did. What you built. What you showed up for. What you are genuinely proud of when you look back honestly at the last three months.

Most business owners skip this question entirely. We are wired to move forward, fix problems, chase goals. Taking time to acknowledge what we have actually accomplished feels indulgent, and it is not. It is fuel. You cannot sustain the effort Q4 requires if you are running on empty and have not stopped to recognize how far you have come.

Question 2: What is the biggest lesson I learned in the last 90 days, and what will I do differently to prove I actually learned it?

This is the question with depth… Not just “what did I learn,” but “what will I do differently to prove I learned it?” Because we all have lessons we keep learning over and over again because we never actually change our behavior in response to them.

The second half of this question is the important half. Writing down a lesson is easy. Naming the specific behavior change that proves you absorbed it is harder. And much more valuable.

Question 3: What will I focus on in Q4?

Not everything. Not your entire vision. Not your five-year plan. What are the one, two, maybe three things that matter most between now and December 31st? What does a successful Q4 actually look like for your business specifically?

This question requires you to make choices. And making choices means letting some things wait. That is uncomfortable for most business owners. It is also completely necessary. Focus is not what happens when everything is done. Focus is what makes the important things get done.

Question 4: What specific project must I complete before the end of the year?

One project. The one that will make the biggest difference. The one you have been circling or putting off or telling yourself you will get to when things slow down — which, as we all know, they never do.

Name it. Write it down. Make it real. Q4 is the last runway you have in 2026. This is the question that helps you use it wisely.

I also ask myself one more question that keeps me grounded: Where will I take myself in the next 90 days to experience both business and pleasure with my family? Because for me that is not a luxury. It is part of how I stay creative, stay inspired, and stay connected to what I am actually building all of this for.

Why This Matters More Than You Think

The business owners I work with who go into Q4 with clarity almost always outperform the ones who go into it on momentum alone.

Momentum is valuable. But momentum without direction is just motion. And motion without intention is exhausting, which is exactly how most business owners describe how they feel by November.

Taking a few hours on Labor Day to sit with these four questions is not a soft activity. It is a strategic one. It is the difference between a Q4 that happens to you and a Q4 that you actually lead. Taking time to reflect on work experiences leads to substantial improvements in professional performance.

If you want to use my four questions for your own Monday morning reflection, please do. They are yours. Grab a cup of coffee, find a quiet corner, and give yourself the gift of an honest answer to each one.

And if you find yourself sitting with the answers and realizing you want to think through your Q4 marketing strategy with a marketing partner in your corner, that is exactly what the Marketing Strategy Intensive is designed for. It is a focused two- to three-week engagement where we build your strategic roadmap for the months ahead together. Send me a note, and we will set up a time to talk.

Wishing you a Labor Day that actually feels like one.
